A CANCER PREVENTION GROUP
Prevention is for everyone, even if you are already sick. “Primary prevention” is used for people who are healthy to prevent illness. “Secondary prevention” helps people at high risk or in a pre-disease state. And “tertiary prevention” helps the person in a full- blown disease state to prevent further complications or a worsening of the disease. The point is, all of us should be looking forward. In fact, health care without prevention is like driving with your eyes closed into oncoming traffic.
Cancer is a monumental epidemic, the elephant in the room that no one is talking about. When the cancer establishment talks about cancer, it talks about treatment, diagnosis and early detection. The focus on prevention is negligible. Meanwhile, this second leading cause of death is about to leave all other causes of death in the dust.
Richard Nixon started the war on cancer in 1971 by pouring unimaginable sums of money into fighting the disease. The National Cancer Institutes budget was increased by thirty times. And all we have to show for our efforts is a runaway epidemic. Until we begin to focus on prevention, nothing will change.
Cancer prevention groups can be started in any community. It’s up to people like you to make things change. A cancer prevention group can focus exclusively on members assisting each other with lifestyle changes to prevent cancer. Or it can work on increasing public awareness and public health efforts in the community. If you live in Nassau County or Westchester County and you are interested in participating in a cancer prevention group, please let me know. If you live anywhere else and want to start a group, go to
