AN ANXIETY SELF-HELP GROUP

Many people suffering from anxiety problems cannot afford professional help. Others live in areas where anxiety specialists are not accessible. Still others who have found help could benefit from an adjunctive approach.

Self-help programs have been shown to be effective if the right methods are used. If the group is used only for sharing and emotional support, it may be helpful in a general sense. But it will not resolve the anxiety problem. A self-help group works best if a self-help book or tape is used to guide participants in exposure therapy, cognitive therapy and training in anxiety reduction coping techniques. To find a self-help group in your area, go to http://www.adaa.org. If you live in Westchester County or Nassau County, and cannot find an accessible self-help group, please contact me. Anxiety & Stress Relief will help anyone willing to form a new group.
